Once downloaded, each marine chart region is available for use offline. When online, a road map or satellite image map is alternatively available.

UK chart regions are available for the United Kingdom, Ireland and Channel Islands as in-app purchases. Each UK chart region in-app purchase gives you 1 year of free chart updates. UK chart regions in MX Mariner are 'derived in part from material obtained from the UK Hydrographic Office'. Please see for more details on offline marine chart regions available for download. MX Mariner is useful for marine navigation featuring a simple heads up display showing speed and course.

You have the ability to drop waypoints, record tracks and create routes. Routes can be activated and the heads up display will also show bearing and range to next waypoint below speed and course. All waypoints, tracks and routes can be backed up as GPX files. GPX files can be imported and exported to other programs. MX Mariner also has configurable units of measure for bearings, position, speed and distance. Bearings in MX Mariner can be shown as true or magnetic.

Magnetic bearings use the world magnetic model published National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. Speed and distances can be set to Nautical, Statute or Metric. Position can be set to degrees, degrees-minutes or degrees-minutes-seconds. Navigators can also choose to use their device internal magnetometer or gps course to orientate ship on the marine chart. Optionally, heading and course predictor lines can also be shown on the marine chart. MX Mariner also offers configurable back-light levels suitable for daylight to off-shore night conditions.

Mariner

Great, simple charting app that I use for fishing and navigation in NY and NJ waters. I chose it over navionics and iboating because of it's use of raster charts showing greater details and specifically vessel warning areas that the other apps seem to leave out.

I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because while navigating the app leaves out one important piece of information - ETA to your waypoint. If the developer adds this, along with a larger display of speed/track/heading, this would be a 5 star app. Updated review.Been using MX Mariner for a year now and time for a reassessment. I think my decision to go with this app, after trying out six or seven chart plotter programs, was the right choice.

The developer is very responsive and helpful. The app is is stable and fast. I am running Android 4.4 on my original model Nexus 7 and 6.1 on my Moto G3, no problems. I am not much interested in marinas but the new integration with the Active Captain database will be nice for those that are. It looks like you don't need to have Active Captain and Adobe Air installed on your tablet at all; MX downloads its own copy of the database.

Since I started using MX in 2014 a number of updates have added useful features including the ability to insert, delete, and move waypoints and routes. The included utility allows one to easily make up a BC 'region' with Canadian BSB3 charts for those who need them (everyone?). Highly recommended.
