Drawbar Settings Handbook : Free Programs, Utilities And Apps

Alright, I'm a bit of a n00b and not very good with drawbars. I've played with them, and understand how they work, but I'll be darned if I can recreate some of the b3 sounds I've heard. Is there any online resource of drawbars settings for popular songs? For example, anyone got a setting that nails Clapton's 'Wonderful Tonight'? I can get sorta close, but there's still something. (I can hear it mostly when the guy does runs up the keyboard on the G D/F# Em part.) I absolutely LOVE all of NI's presets and rely on them more than I probably should.

Alright, I'd be lost without them! Click to expand. You could write books on this subject.oh yeh, already been done! Here's some basics from my experience. 888800000 The first four drawbars all the way out is a very common and basic setting.

This has a deep tone and with the 5 1/3 in there, gives it a distinct organ flavor. (Try it with and without that 5 1/3) This setting can be used on many types of music.

Adding some 1' or a combination of 1' & 2' settings, will give it more cutting ability in a mix. Adjust the higher pitches according to your needs. (888800006 - 888806006) 888000000 Another basic setting is the first three drawbars all the way out. This is somewhat softer and works well as a fill and as a bass line, just like the above setting. 808000000 Pulling out the 5 1/3 leaving just the 16' and 8' is yet a softer tone with a very clean sound since no fractional footages are used. I like to add some 4' and 2' with that again for clarity in a mix etc.

(808060000 - 805060006) You can try the 16' & 4' which sounds a little more hollow. 800800000 BTW.a setting of 868000000 is considered the standard Jazz Bass setting.

Drawbar

A very gospel lead setting that is common is 088888888. Give it a try. I look at the lower three or four drawbars as the foundation while adding the upper footages for brightness & clarity. Using the even footages (2' & 1') on the top keeps the sound clean. Adding the 2 2/3 - 1 3/5 - 1 1/3 (usually along with the 2 & 1) add more complexity to the sound and might be as close to a pipe organ a Hammond can get.

Like 888888888 Good luck! Let me know how that works out.

Years ago Keyboard Magazine had an issue with a bunch of famous Hammond songs and their settings. Believe it or not, a lot of pros don't like to let out their settings because they think it is something that they may have over other players.

Another typical setting is somewhat.continental. In North America, players tend to use the third harmonic in the percussion, while in Europe, the second harmonic is often favored. Of course nowadays there is much crossover in those kinds of things but a few decades ago, that was very common.
